Gype beach & canyon
Gype beach and canyon This little white spot is, in fact a narrow canyon with a dry river in the bottem, ending in a small beach surrounded by high rocks inaccessible for an average tourist. To get to Gype you have put a lot of effort, but it pays back – you will have a beautiful, secluded beach all to yourself.
There are no buses going to that beach, or a proper road going to this beach. Dhërmi beach is the closest beach to Gype where you can take speed boat to get to Gype beach or you can walk for about 1,5 km from the Monastery of Siant Theodor to Gype beach.
The lack of reliable information regarding the whereabouts of the beach makes it difficult finding Gype but it is a challenge you should not let go.
Hiking the Canyon to Gjipe
Alternatively, you can get to Gype beach by hiking there through the canyon. The “path” through the canyon starts right near the main road. There is a sign on where to go down to the path.Apparently the hike through Gype canyon is about 5km and very tough. You have to climb over lots of rocks along the way. I also read that you need climbing gear for some of the steep parts! If you want to go into the canyon, it is probably best to first go to the beach, and then hike into the canyon from there. The trip to Gype can be done as a day trip. The beach and nature are beautiful.
To enjoy the trip to Gype, you will need:
Water, Swimming Stuff, Food, Toilet Paper: Do you need an explanation?
In general, going to Gype is safe… but there are some things you need to be cautious about.
The weather changes quickly on the sea. If heavy rains come, the water will surge down the canyon and come out on the beach.
Do not camp right next to the beach.
Do not go hiking in the canyon if it about to rain.
Do not camp where the canyon lets out.
Falling Rocks: Gype is right next to a canyon, and it is never wise to sta, camp or sleep right under a cliff. A big ol’ rock can come crashing down on you.
Snakes: The Balkans have two poisonous snakes, both types of vipers. Generally, you won’t see vipers at this low of an elevation. However, you will probably see other snakes.
